A small DC-DC converter the size of and with the same pinout as an LM708x linear regulator. This converter can usually be used as a direct replacement. Compared to a linear regulator, this converter converts the voltage much more efficiently. To make the converter work properly, only a 10uF capacitor is needed on the input and a 22uF on the output. See the datasheet for an example circuit.

In addition to a positive voltage, this converter can also create a negative voltage, see the datasheet for more information about this.
