My project, running on an ESP32, was short of GPIOs. For simple switches and on/off outputs this MCP23017 was the perfect solution. Via Github, I obtained this handy library and it worked fine. I can recommend this expander if you run out of pins. Fortunately, I already had other I²C devices connected so this expander could easily be added.
