The RP2040 is my favourite microcontroller. It has just enough features for any basic project you can do with arduino, but many many times faster.
Runs micro/circuitpython amazingly as well.

It's not as advanced like most ST chips, but that's not a bad thing. You dont always want to pay for features you wont use in a basis project.

This thing is the next step from arduino in my opinion.
